Job overview

ABUHB Community dental service is pleased to be able to offer part time Senior Community dentist. Based at Nevill Hall, Abergavenny, SE Wales.

The post holder will have a senior community dentist role in providing more complex dental care for Special Care Dentistry patients working alongside the specialists/consultants in Special Care Dentistry (SCD). The post holder will provide information reports and other contributions to the Dental Business Team as requested. 

Main duties of the job

Senior Community Dentist post providing Special Care Dentistry for vulnerable adults and children from fixed sites, hospital, mobile units and domiciliary care to support consultants and specialist in Special Care Dentistry. Postgraduate qualification in Special Care Dentistry is required. The applicant should be willing to train in the provision of conscious sedation as required.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and/or adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer -Enhanced check with barred list information  including an adults and children’s barred list check.

Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a full registration and a licence to practice with the GDC.

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in NHS primary/community dental care.
  • Experience of 5 years in NHS.
  • Provision of dental care for vulnerable adults and children in different sites
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification in sedation


Essential criteria
  • Able to apply knowledge and clinical skills in SCD.
  • Trained or willing to train in the provision of dental sedation
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)
  • Postgraduate training in sedation


Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in Quality and Patient Safety quality improvement methodologies, that includes audit, Peer Review, Reflective Learning etc
  • Knowledge of risk management


Essential criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication.


Essential criteria
  • Full GDC Registration
  • Postgraduate qualification relevant to Special Care Dentistry or conscious sedation
  • BDS
Desirable criteria
  • Other related certificate or diploma related to SCD
  • Relevant higher degree e.g. PhD, MSc
