Are you looking for an exciting and rewarding job with opportunities to work across hospital and hospice setting - Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is currently undergoing some exciting changes and developments, in partnership with our third sector providers? If so, we would like to welcome you to join our team of 5 consultants who currently provide services to 3 acute hospital sites; Royal Gwent Hospital, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr and Nevill Hall Hospital, a 15 bed Specialist Inpatient Unit (St David’s Hospice Care) and Gwent and South Powys community teams.

The post will primarily be based at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr and St David’s Hospice Care, however this is a current proposed job plan. In light of our clinical futures programme, our service is currently being reconfigured, hence job plans are continually under review and may be subject to change in the future. We would urge any candidate interested in working in any part of the ABUHB palliative care service, to contact us to discuss in more detail and negotiate an alternative job plan.

In 2021 Aneurin Bevan University Health Board will open a state of the art Specialist Critical Care Centre; Grange University Hospital and we are currently reconfiguring our services to expand and develop to meet the needs of an expanding service, in line with Clinical Futures.

Aneurin Bevan has an advantageous geographical location, closely linked to both Cardiff and Bristol, and easily commutable from both.

The Palliative Care Directorate are looking for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine who will be responsible for the effective and appropriate medical care of patients across the directorate supporting the teams.  

You will lead consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings and supervise any junior medical staff or students who may rotate through the directorate. You may be required to perform domiciliary visits in the community to support local Specialist Palliative Care Teams. The post holder may occasionally be expected to provide cover at other hospitals, as specified above. The post holder will also be expected to provide prospective cover for colleagues.

The multidisciplinary team includes consultants in palliative medicine, specialty doctors, nursing staff, clinical nurse specialists, social worker, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, complementary therapist, pastoral care and ABUHB general staff across the divisions.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer: 

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults barred list check.

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
