The post holder will work collaboratively with the Directorate Management Team and ABUHB Head of Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) in the development of an efficient and effective SLT service for adults with a learning disability accessing Learning Disability services in ABUHB. This will include the coordination and evaluation of service delivery and the development of joined up SLT service provision across all aspects of adult Learning Disability service delivery.

The post holder will be clinically accountable for the practice of all SLT staff working in the adult Learning Disability service. They will take professional responsibility for the SLT staff and will be required to work closely with Team Managers, Senior nurses and the Directorate Management Team to ensure effective planning, development and organisation of the delivery of SLT services within the directorate. A key component of this role will involve active participation in the adult learning disability directorate management team.

The post-holder will be expected to:

  • As service requires, support a small clinical caseload of adults accessing the Learning Disability Service.
  • Provide direct clinical and professional leadership to the SLT service, including professional supervision and the development of SLT staff within the multi-disciplinary context.
  • Work collaboratively with Team Managers in relation to managerial supervision, personal development reviews, conduct and performance issues relating to SLT staff in the learning disability directorate.
  • Take an ABUHB wide perspective ensuring that SLT provision best meets local need, within the context of the strategic direction of the SLT service.
  • Ensure that SLT is represented in all relevant multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
  • Contribute to budget setting for the service and provide assurance of a clinically and cost effective service.
  • Act as a source for senior professional advice to directorate management team, senior managers and external agencies concerning the professional practice, development and supervision of SLT staff employed within learning disability services.
  • Lead on service developments/projects across the directorate on behalf of the directorate management team which may not specifically relate to Speech and Language Therapy.
