Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Paediatrics

Anticipated Start Date: as soon as possible

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport SE Wales


We require an Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Paediatrics to support the ophthalmology service within our Health Board. This role will complement the other speciality interests in the Directorate (Cornea, Oculoplastic, Glaucoma, Medical Retina and existing Paediatric Consultant).  The successful post holder will have both a general and Paediatric element to their job plan.

The Ophthalmology Department is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital where we have a purpose built ophthalmology unit with outpatient, ward, theatre and day case facilities. Day case surgery and outpatient clinics are also held at Nevill Hall Hospital.  Outreach outpatient clinics are also held at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital and other sites within Gwent.  In addition the service has recently set up Glaucoma Ophthalmic Diagnostic and Treatment Centres, to provide assessment and diagnosis for Glaucoma and OHT in a community setting to improve access to ophthalmology services.  We have also recently commissioned community sited Wed AMD Diagnostic and Treatment Centres.

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board supports modernisation and the continued development of ophthalmology in improving and developing services which is key in the provision of a quality service for our patients.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults and children’s barred list check.


Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview. 

This post is not included on the current UK Shortage Occupation List and is subject to the rules outlined in the attachment ‘Resident Labour Market Test Guidance’.
