This is a new post offering applicants a unique opportunity to work at CT1-2 level across several sub specialities in Medicine. Successful applicants will also be required to participate in the general on-call rota. The on call rota is a fully compliant European Working Time Directive rota. In addition to day on call commitments it involves blocks of 4 week-nights and 3 weekend nights during a 14-week cycle.
General Internal Medicine at the Royal Gwent Hospital includes the following sub specialities:
• Acute Medicine
• Care of the Elderly
• Diabetes and Endocrinology
• Infectious Diseases
• Respiratory Medicine
The Royal Gwent Hospital is the busiest District General Hospital in Wales with approximately 800 beds, of which about 300 are medical.
Patients are admitted via an unselected medical intake with cardiac emergencies taken over by the cardiology teams the following day. There is a modern Medical Assessment Unit with 15 trolleys and 24 beds.
Educational opportunities are excellent. There is a state of the art library and newly refurbished postgraduate centre. There is a weekly medical meeting on Wednesday lunchtime followed by protected teaching time for doctors in medicine. The hospital runs a nationally renowned MRCP PACES course three times per year.
This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
• Enhanced check with barred list information, including
- an adults and children’s barred list check
Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC

Course Funding: Please note that unless agreed by the Division in advance, course funding is not available for Clinical Fellow or fixed term cover for training grades.
This post is not included on the current UK Shortage Occupation List and is subject to the rules outlined in the attachment ‘Resident Labour Market Test Guidance’.
