Clinical Development Fellow in Emergency Medicine
Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, South East Wales
Fixed Term Contract of 6months initially
Anticipated Start Date: February 2020
These new 12 month posts are an innovation by the Emergency Medicine team at the Royal Gwent hospital for August 2019.
These clinical development fellows offer clinical experience in a busy and well supported Emergency Department with allocated time off the clinical rota for development in a number of innovative areas, including pre-hospital medicine, simulation and teaching.
They would particularly suit those who have passed their FY2 (or equivalent) competencies and have sound background knowledge of medicine, but may be undecided about their career pathway and/or would like to take time out of formal training. Within a supportive and professional team and environment, Clinical Fellows experience a very broad spectrum of clinical experience and a collaborative interface with wider associated specialties, aiming always to work together to provide an excellent patient experience.
The Clinical Fellow are afforded the same training opportunities as our training posts, with access to in house training – this includes protected monthly consultant led teaching days. Study leave is encouraged and the appointees will have the opportunity to perform an audit cycle and take part in case presentations.
The Clinical Development Fellows will have time off their clinical rota dedicated to a specific area of interest that they can arrange prior to starting the post. The department is able to offer opportunities in the following but could offer other areas for specific candidates:
Clinical Fellows (CF) in Emergency Medicine assume the responsibilities normally associated with junior grade (SHO level) appointment in Emergency Department (ED), and have access to a full range of IT facilities within the department.
The Emergency Unit is a busy urban department seeing 84,000 new patient attendances per year, the team working and friendly atmosphere ensures the efficacy of the department. 25% of attendances are within the paediatric age group. The co-location of the paediatric assessment unit with the paediatric emergency department enables close working with our Child Health colleagues. The department has an excellent reputation regionally for providing experience of most things you will find in the ‘Oxford Handbook’ in a year at the Royal Gwent Hospital – particularly in the cases that pass through our Resus room. There is an emphasis on teaching and an innovative scenario-based adult & paediatric resuscitation/simulation teaching is run by the Emergency Department/ Paediatrics /Anaesthetics with all relevant specialties attending.
The department functions well as a team, currently comprising 12 enthusiastic Consultants (increasing to 13 with future appointments), 2 Associate Specialists, 2 Specialty Doctors, 6 Specialist Registrars, 19 junior doctors including these posts.
Although these Clinical Fellow posts are not recognised for training, they are afforded the same training opportunities as our training posts, with access to in house training. Study leave is encouraged. You will have the opportunities to perform an audit cycle and take part in case presentations.
This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
