Consultant Cardiologist Special Interest: Imaging

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, SE Wales

 Full Time (10 Sessions) Plus 1 Additional Temporary Sessions

We are looking to appoint a Cardiologist with special expertise in cardiac imaging.

The successful candidate will join the 12 existing Consultants in this Health Board in providing a comprehensive Cardiac service across Gwent. The appointee will need a sound and wide experience of General Cardiology, delivering independently hands-on care and clinical leadership in a busy enhanced DGH. We expect up-to-date skills in echocardiography (including TOE & stress echocardiography) and we also require proficiency in cardiac CT or Nuclear Cardiology (ideally both).

This post has a commitment to our adult congenital heart disease service (currently one OP clinic per month, held in conjunction with the tertiary ACHD team of the University Hospital of Wales).

The post will be based at the Royal Gwent Hospital. The successful candidate will joining 9 other consultants on this site supported by three SpRs and eight other junior doctors. The Cardiologists share a commitment to the general cardiology on call rota but have no responsibility for General Internal Medicine.

We operate a ward-based system with 42 Cardiology beds (including 6 monitored/step-down beds) and a six-bedded Coronary Care unit. We have a purpose built department with dedicated angiography laboratory and 8 bedded day ward, facilities for echocardiography, heart failure and rapid access clinics, office accommodation and a seminar room. We have two cardiac catheter laboratories on site.

Our new £350m 462 bed purpose built Specialist and Critical Care Centre named “The Grange University Hospital” will complete construction next year. This will lead to centralisation of all in-patient cardiology services on to this site. There will be 2 cardiac catheter laboratories, a pacing suite and a large acute cardiac care unit plus ward beds. The hospital is scheduled to open to patients in March 2021.

There are excellent links with our local tertiary centre (University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff) and an active South Wales Cardiac Network

A CCT in Cardiology with higher specialist training (or equivalent) is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to fulfil all duties of the post, including on-call commitments and travel to meet requirements of the post

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.
