Locum Consultant Urologist

Full Time (10 Sessions)

 

Based Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, South East Wales

Duration: up to 6 months with a possibility of an extension

The Department of Urology at Newport is currently staffed by 7 Consultants, 1 is a shared post with general surgery to cover paediatrics, 1 Associate Specialist, 3 Specialist Registrars, 1 clinical fellow, 1 CT2 and 3 FP2 doctors.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is one of the largest and busiest in the UK with acute hospitals at Newport, Abergavenny and Ystrad Mynach, supported by community hospitals and extensive community, general practices, mental health and learning disability services. The Board has three acute hospitals and twelve other hospitals. A Specialist and Critical Care Centre is already planned. It has over 13,000 staff, including over 1,000 doctors and general practitioners, 250 consultants and a nursing staff of more than 5,000. Its Clinical School has 950 medical students and 350 post-graduate junior doctor replacements each year.

 The Urology Department in Newport is the busiest in Wales and delivers a comprehensive range of services covering all urological subspecialties. The department has regular shared access to a robot for the provision of prostate cancer treatment.

Applicants should have substantial consultant level experience and although the majority of work would be General Urology there is room to consider a particular subspecialist interest if the applicant can show corresponding subspecialty training and experience. You should be a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, or hold equivalent qualifications. Applications must also be supported by evidence of admittance to the GMC Specialist Register.

The Board covers a key geographical area on the picturesque Welsh border, with Cardiff and Bristol within commuting distance and direct links by road and rail to major UK centres such as London, Birmingham and Manchester.

Gwent is situated between Gloucestershire to the east and Cardiff and the Wales valleys to the west, combining many of the attributes of neighbouring parts of England and Wales. The City of Newport is just 12 miles from Cardiff and close to the splendour of the Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley. Bristol is within 30 minutes drive.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

    - an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
