Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Cataract / Oculoplastic

Full time (10 sessions)

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Gwent, South Wales

We require an Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Cataract surgery with the addition of Oculoplastic to support the ophthalmology service within our Health Board. This role will complement the other speciality interests in the Directorate (Cornea, Oculoplastic, Paediatrics, Glaucoma and existing Retina Consultant Team).  The successful post holder will have both a Cataract and oculoplastic element to their job plan.

The Ophthalmology Department is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital where we have a purpose built ophthalmology unit with outpatient, ward, theatre and day case facilities. Day case surgery and outpatient clinics are also held at Nevill Hall Hospital.  Outreach outpatient clinics are also held at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital and other sites within Gwent.  In addition the service has in place Glaucoma Ophthalmic Diagnostic and Treatment Centres, to provide assessment and diagnosis for Glaucoma and OHT in a community setting to improve access to ophthalmology services.  We also have a community sited Wed AMD Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board supports modernisation and the continued development of ophthalmology in improving and developing services which is key in the provision of a quality service for our patients.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process. 

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including  an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
