Consultant Interventional Radiologist

Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, with cross site cover for Nevil Hall Hospital and Ystrad Ysbyty Fawr sites also.

 Full Time (10 Sessions)

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

Closing Date for Applications: 30th December 2019

We are delighted to invite applications for the post of an Interventional Radiologist based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport. The successful applicant will join a team of, working across our Royal Gwent Hospital, Nevil Hall Hospital and Ystrad Ysbyty Fawr sites.

This is a new post and the successful applicant will join a large friendly team of enthusiastic radiologists. Imaging has a high profile in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Interventional Radiology (IR) has been a large part of this.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) provides a wide range of diagnostic and interventional radiology services. The IR lists take place in two labs both of which are located in the radiology department. Vascular services in ABUHB foster a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and there is an excellent working relationship between the surgeons and interventional radiologists. ABUHB acts as a Tertiary Centre for many Oncology Interventions such as TACE, PV Embolisation, RIG, SIRT and Thermal ablation of lung, liver, kidney and bone tumours. We have both Radiofrequency and Microwave ablation equipment available.

We currently offer an extensive range of both vascular and nonvascular interventions encompassing Peripheral Angioplasty, simple and complex EVAR, complex Embolisations, PAE, UFE, Biliary and GI Stenting in addition to the Oncology workload. There is independent access to outpatient clinic facilities and admission rights to surgical beds is now available to IR Consultants.

The provision of both elective and emergency vascular surgical services is currently undergoing exciting reorganisation. The aim is to centralise vascular services across South East Wales and it is anticipated that this will further enhance the already established network approach that will involve cross site working, a regional MDT and an AAA screening service. We currently perform approximately 40-50 EVARs per year in ABUHB but as a single network caring for a population of 1.2million this number is expected to rise to approximately 120 based on current local data.

Following the completion of the South East Wales review, a sustainable 1 in 8 IR on call commenced in February 2019 working with Cwm Taf and Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. The successful applicant to this post will be expected to join this rota.

ABUHB is currently building a brand new critical care centre- the Grange University Hospital, which is expected to open in early 2021. The post will initially be based at the Royal Gwent Hospital and expected to be largely based in the new hospital in 2021. It is however expected that interventional radiologists in South East Wales will work across health board boundaries on a more collaborative basis to provide both elective and emergency services in the future.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.
