Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
Consultant in Histopathology
Full Time (10 sessions)
Based at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport or Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny
Anticipated Start Date: ASAP
Closing Date: Midnight on 10th March 2021
We are looking for a Consultant Histopathologist to join our team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
Consultant histopathologist posts have Pan-Gwent responsibilities, with duties performed for both Nevill Hall Hospital and the Royal Gwent Hospital. The appointee may negotiate a nominated base at either hospital at the conditional offer stage. Interest in a sub speciality will be encouraged but the Department deals in a variety of specimens excluding cardiac and neuropathology.
The Department of Cellular Pathology is centralised in The Royal Gwent Hospital and provides histology, cytology and post mortem services for the health board. Daily peer review meetings are well established where all histopathologists discuss difficult, interesting and malignant cases.
The cellular pathology department has a clear vision to deliver high quality, robust services. This vision involves addressing the rising clinical demand by developing a more robust staffing structure including increasing the Pathologist complement, utilisation of Biomedical Scientist staff to undertake the majority of specimen dissection and supporting Biomedical Scientist staff to undertake the RCPath/IBMS advanced qualification in histological reporting
Participation in Coroner’s post mortem cases is optional and will be shared with the other Pathologists through separate contractual arrangements. There is a modern mortuary at Grange University Hospital where all post mortem examinations are carried out.
The department has close links with the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where tertiary referral of cases and sharing of network MDT meetings regularly take place. Regular rotation of junior histopathologists with the University Hospital of Wales has been in place since 2015.
The successful applicants will work in a team currently consisting of 9 Consultants. The laboratory is fully ISO 15189:2012 accredited and holds an HTA tissue licence.
Newport and Abergavenny lie on the River Usk, the axis of the county of Gwent, and are surrounded by The Brecon Beacons, The Wye Valley and The Forest of Dean. On either side are the Cities of Cardiff and Bristol, with good road and rail links, to them and beyond.
As part of the development of the Health Board a new Hospital has been built at the Grange University Hospital. There are plans to improve the histopathology service by providing modern premises either at the Royal Gwent Hospital or at the Grange Hospital to house the laboratory and histopathogists.
Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to practice.
