Consultant in Histopathology

Full Time (10 sessions)

Based at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport or Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny

Anticipated Start Date: as soon as possible

Closing Date for Applications: Midnight on 4th February 2020

Newport and Abergavenny lie on the River Usk, the axis of the county of Gwent, and are surrounded by The Brecon Beacons, The Wye Valley and The Forest of Dean. On either side are the Cities of Cardiff and Bristol, with good road and rail links, to them and beyond. The Department of Cellular Pathology is centralised in The Royal Gwent Hospital and provides histology, cytology and post mortem services for the health board. Daily peer review meetings are well established where all histopathologists discuss difficult, interesting and malignant cases.

There will be future investment in the development of cellular pathology facilities and equipment as the service is an integral component of the health board wide clinical futures programme. Significant investment by Welsh government has been secured in order to build the Specialist & Critical Care Centre (SCCC) which demonstrates commitment to services within Aneurin Bevan Health Board

The cellular pathology department has a clear vision to deliver high quality, robust services. This vision involves addressing the rising clinical demand by developing a more robust staffing structure including increasing the Pathologist complement, utilisation of Biomedical Scientist staff to undertake the majority of specimen dissection and supporting Biomedical Scientist staff to undertake the RCPath/IBMS advanced qualification in histological reporting

Consultant histopathologist posts have Pan-Gwent responsibilities, with duties performed for both Nevill Hall Hospital and the Royal Gwent Hospital. The appointee may negotiate a nominated base at either hospital at the conditional offer stage. Interest in a sub speciality will be encouraged but the Department deals in a variety of specimens excluding cardiac and neuropathology. The successful applicants will work in a team currently consisting of 9 Consultants. The laboratory is currently UKAS accredited and holds an HTA tissue licence. Participation in Coroner’s post mortem cases is optional and will be shared with the other Pathologists through separate contractual arrangements. The department has close links with the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where tertiary referral of cases and sharing of network MDT meetings regularly take place. Regular rotation of junior histopathologists with the University Hospital of Wales has been in place since 2015.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and/or adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including

         - an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to practice.

Candidates for consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.

This post is not included on the current UK Shortage Occupation List and is subject to the rules outlined in the attachment ‘Resident Labour Market Test Guidance’.
