Consultant Geriatrician Interest in Emergency Frailty Unit(EFU)
Full Time (10 Sessions plus 1 additional temporary session

Within ABUHB we’re setting up the pace in the Care of the Elderly Directorate by investing in innovative services to address the acute medical problems and care needs of our older population.
This substantive post will be based at the Royal Gwent Hospital. The consultant in the Emergency Frail Unit (EFU) will work alongside 8 Consultant Geriatricians working within the Royal Gwent Hospital. The service is well supported with a team of 19 Training and Non Training Grade Doctors, including two Specialty Registrars and 4 Specialty Doctors, 3 Physician Assistants, Discharge Coordinators, Therapists and Pharmacists. The multidisciplinary team works together for comprehensive geriatric assessments and improving patient centered outcomes. With a large elderly population in South Wales there has been increased demand for our services. The planned developments will provide partnership working with our primary care and community colleagues for streamlining hospital admissions aimed to follow best practice principles in acute medical care and facilitate timely discharge of older people to avoid hospital acquired complications.
Sub-acute and rehabilitation services provision is at St Woolos and Chepstow Community Hospitals when required.
Our Care of the Elderly Department is well known for team ethos, culture of openness and fair job share. Typical substantive consultant job plans offer - 11 PAs, 7 DCC (including admin),3 SPAs+1 GIM on call session, GIM rota currently 1:12, projected to expand to 1:15 after the new appointments. Newly appointed consultants will be encouraged to develop their own sub specialty interest. Our experienced consultants are also willing to flex up their job plans to accommodate the professional development needs of new appointees.
ABUHB is one of the largest Health Boards in Wales, situated in picturesque surroundings of South Wales in close vicinity to Cardiff, Bristol and the Brecon Beacons National Park, giving excellent work life balance. Newport also has close links to London via the M4.
Health Board actively supports 3 month fully funded formal sabbaticals through an annual application process. Successful candidates will play a key role in ongoing service developments by joining our team of experienced geriatricians. The role of geriatricians is crucial in implementing best practice in terms of leadership, clinical governance, education and training.

This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
