Specialty Doctor in Older Adult Psychiatry
Full Time (10 Sessions)

An enthusiastic Specialty Doctor is required to join the Torfaen Borough Older Adult Mental Health team, with a catchment area of approximately 18000 Older Adults.
Torfaen and south-east Wales is a thriving and cosmopolitan location, with easy access to the Severn Bridge in the east and the capital, Cardiff, in the west. The locality is surrounded by some of the most breath taking scenery in the UK, with the sea to the south and the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains to the north.
Torfaen is dissected by the M4 corridor – and with the removal of the tolls to cross the Severn Bridge it has never been more accessible. Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

Torfaen borough has a very well developed community older adult mental health team, a well modelled & novel inpatient functional illness ward responsible for all the 5 boroughs and a forward thinking and innovative Memory assessment service. There is psychology and OT support embedded across the service. There is a separate dedicated Older Adult Psychiatric Liaison (OAPL) team to deal with patients admitted to general hospital. There will be opportunities for teaching, clinical research and quality improvements initiatives. The current post holder has successfully completed an MSc in Psychiatry and MRCPsych qualifications and has been a lecturer for undergraduates. The job planning would give ample opportunities to have further training in Psychiatry and to develop a special interest.
The post holder will be based at the purpose built Ty Siriol Unit where the CMHT, Memory Assessment service, inpatient functional illness unit, in-reach nurses, occupational therapy, outpatient and Clinical Psychology departments are co-located. The post holder will have comprehensive responsibilities along with the Consultant Psychiatrist. The adult psychiatric unit, Talygarn, is located adjacent with which we maintain a close working relationship. County hospital has general outpatient facilities for various medical specialties, inpatient medical rehab wards with some frailty assessment beds, physiotherapy department and some investigation facilities.
The post holder will be required to work closely with the Frailty (care of the elderly) team based at County Hospital to help manage comorbidities.
This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
• Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults barred list check
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a License to Practice. Experience in older adult medicine would be beneficial. Practical knowledge of Mental Health Act & Mental Capacity Act are essential.
