Nevill Hall Hospital is a District General Hospital in Abergavenny, North Monmouthshire, Wales. The hospital provides care to the population of north Gwent and South Powys, and is situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.


There are five 28 to 30-bedded medical wards looking after patients in Care of the Elderly, Cardiology, Respiratory, Haematology, Gastroenterology, Diabetes/Endocrinology and Stroke. The medical department at Nevill Hall looks after an unselected intake of approximately 40 patients in 24 hours.


In addition there is a 6-bedded Cardiac Care Unit, and an Emergency Assessment Unit for the assessment of patients referred to both medicine and surgery. The Emergency Assessment Unit and Ambulatory Care Unit are run by the Acute Physicians supported by the majority of the physicians working in the department and some from elsewhere within the health board.


A new Ambulatory Care Unit is set to open in the coming weeks. These posts are full time and will participate on the unselected medical intake rota and provide a broad experience in Acute and General Medicine. The ward based work include opportunities in Stroke Rehab and Endocrinology.


Junior doctors spend the majority of their time on their specialty wards, and rotate 1 week in 4 to their on-call weeks. There are a total of 39 junior doctors in department supported by a team of 6 specialty medical nurse practitioners.


Educational opportunities are excellent. There is a state of art library and refurbished Postgraduate Centre. There is a well-attended weekly Medical Meeting on Tuesday mornings, a hospital grand round on Thursday lunchtime followed by protected teaching time for CT doctors in Medicine.


The post holder will experience a very broad spectrum of clinical experience and a collaborative interface with wider associated specialties, aiming always to work together to provide an excellent patient experience.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including   
  • - an adults and children’s barred list check

 Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Course Funding: Please note that unless agreed by the Division in advance, course funding is not available for Clinical Fellow or fixed term cover for training grades.
