Full Time

Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR Level) in Pleural Intervention/ Pleural Disease

Duration: 12 months initially

Anticipated Start Date: August 2018

Based: Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, SE Wales

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR Level) in Respiratory Medicine. The post is available from August 2018 for 12 months initially with a possible extension. The post is specifically for a Clinical Fellow in Pleural Intervention/Pleural Disease and intervention/lung cancer and is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, South Wales (EBUS performed in Nevill Hall).

The Royal Gwent Hospital is one of the busiest acute teaching hospitals in the country with over 800 beds and 290 acute medical beds.

The post holder will work directly with a Consultant Respiratory Physician, advanced nurse practitioner and senior nursing team to provide support to the pleural unit as well as assessing and treating patients identified with pleural disease in A&E and the Medical Assessment Unit to promptly start the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway. The Pleural unit based within the respiratory ward provides up to 3 lists a week. The successful application will have the opportunity to train in advanced pleural intervention (thoracoscopy, large bore drains, tunnelled indwelling pleural draining and management of pleural fistula) as well as gain experience in lung cancer/EBUS. Training to level 1 thoracic ultrasound or enhancement of level 1 skills and work towards level 2 will be encouraged depending of the training requirements of the successful applicant. You will also support the pleural outpatient clinic held at the Chest Clinic at St Woolos Hospital as well as the weekly pleural MDT.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in local and national audits as well as research project where we already have links with Pleural Units at Bristol and Oxford as well as take part in the lung cancer trials.

The post has been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians; the applicant will receive the same training and experience in line with existing specialist registrar training in Respiratory Medicine. The posts would ideally suit someone who has completed the PACES examination, CT grades and has experience in Respiratory Medicine and wishes to look at developing a sub specialist interest in pleural procedures and pleural disease. However, it is not essential and the work commitments of the team will be reviewed and adjusted to that of a more junior or more senior level but both of the potential job timetables provide excellent experience in Pleural Respiratory Medicine.

You will be expected to participate in the acute general medicine on call rota.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
